Looking for a long term rental? Deciding where to stay can be a tricky task when you take all the important factors into account. So, in order to help you make the best possible decision and hopefully save you from some unnecessary complications, we’ve created a guide to choosing your best long term vacation rental on Roatan!
There are some important questions to answer before choosing your long term rental… Full warning – once you arrive to the island, you may find yourself answering these questions on a regular basis as you meet new people. We are a friendly bunch here on Roatan!
“What brings you to Roatan?”
First things first, consider why you are coming to the island. Are you coming to take advantage of your remote working position? Are you becoming a Dive Master or doing other SCUBA courses? Taking on a volunteer position? Looking to get a feel for the island before making the final decision to move to our piece of Caribbean paradise?
The reason for your visit will dictate the best possible location for your stay…
For example, f you’re working from ‘home’, you may find that the quiet community of Sandy Bay is your best option.
If you’re coming to the island to complete a dive course – you will most likely want to stay in West End as it is home to dozens of dive shops. If you’re doing your course at a shop that is locate outside of West End, then we recommend getting familiar with the area of the dive shop and stay close to reduce your daily travel time and expense.
Although we’re a small island, we definitely recommend choosing to stay in or near the area where you will be most active in the community – it just makes life easier in the long run.
“How long are you staying on the island?”
Having a fairly good idea of the length of your stay will help you choose where to stay. A long term rental can look quite different when you picture yourself staying for 3 months versus 1 year…
Keeping in mind that plans change – and change and change again – having a solid game plan can help you decide on your budget, ideal location and necessary amenities.
Long term rentals can last anywhere from 1 month to a yearly lease.
“What’s on your Must-Have list?”
Deciding ahead of time what you can and cannot live without will make the transition to island life a lot easier! As you can imagine, each persons list is very different and so knowing yours is important for us to assist you in finding the perfect long term rental on Roatan.

Guanaja suffered a disastrous fire this past week, incinerating about 40% of the community’s buildings. The fire began on the evening of October 2nd and forced hundreds of people to evacuate. Thankfully, the fire was controlled and extinguished with everyone evacuated safely without any major injuries.
As you can imagine, Guanaja is now in need of our support. There are various business and organizations coordinating donation drop-offs throughout the island of Roatan. They are collecting personal, food and household items along with monetary donations. If you are able to help, we ask that you do so.
The Rotary Club of Roatán in particular has offered to coordinate donations of cash and supplies and take them to those affected in Guanaja. We have partnered with the Make it Count Foundation, an American 501c3 charity so donations can be accepted by credit card and are tax deductible for donors from the United States.
All donations received will be used to finance the most immediate needs of the affected people in Guanaja.

Late on the night of October 2, 2021, a fire spread through Guanaja. The fire was finally put out after destroying approximately 125 homes and 90 businesses.
The strength of our community
The fire on Guanaja shook the Bay Islands community and spurred immediate action from the surrounding islands. Roatan got right to setting up donation drop-offs for household, personal and food items for those affected by the fire on Guanaja.
The Rotary Club of Roatan has set up a fundraising page to help those who lost everything in the tremendous fire on the Guanaja Cay. Most people escaped with only the clothes on their backs. All of the funds raised will go to helping the community get back on its feet.
If you are able to donate to those most affected, we encourage you to do so through the Rotary Club of Roatan.
Animal rescue
Animal lovers have also stepped up in helping with the devastation from the fire on Guanaja. Roatan vets such as Bonanza Vet Clinic and animal shelters like Island Dogs Rock have taken in rescue animals. Other community groups are also collecting food and emergency items to send to the island.
The Island Vet on Guanaja, along with amazing volunteers and other organizations have been searching the debris and finding trapped and injured animals all week.
The island of Guanaja has suffered a huge loss in this fire and they need your help. Please donate to any of the drop-offs being organized throughout the community or consider donating if you are able.
Our hearts and prayer go out to all of those who have been affected by this tragic event. We thank all those who have gone to volunteer and assist in Guanaja.
It’s no secret – Canadians love to travel. But what you may not know is that Canadians LOVE travelling to Roatan. You only have to visit the island once to find that many Canadians travel to Roatan and many decide to stay put.
Canadian travel is seeing some big changes at the moment due to COVID-19 policies. We want to make sure our Roatan-loving Canadians are able to make the trip and so let’s take a look at what is changing for Canadian travel.
Trudeau announces mandatory vaccination for Canadian Travellers
According to a press release on October 6th, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced mandatory vaccinations for the federal workforce and federally regulated transportation sectors. This means that all Canadians travelling domestically or internationally on planes, trains, (nope – not automobiles) and marine vessels such as cruise ships, must be fully vaccinated.
Beginning October 30, 2021, all you ‘Roatanadians’ out there will need to be fully vaccinated for your next trip to Roatan. If you’re planning to come visit your favorite island, make sure you have all necessary documentation with you to ensure a smooth travel day.
Canadians LOVE Roatan
Canadians travel to Roatan for many different reasons, but most seem to stay on the island for a love of the lifestyle….
No more snow tires!
Canadians are not hard to find on Roatan and neither are Canadian owned businesses! The most widely known Canadian owned business on Roatan is Sundowners in West End. Here you will find many other Canadians along with travellers from all other parts of the world. Other Canadian owned businesses include the Hangover Hut and JavaVine in West Bay as well as Gran Bleu Diving in Sandy Bay.
Canadian Flight Options
Canadians travelling to Roatan have a few options for direct flights, as well as various connections through the United States. The newest flight schedule is showing direct flights from Toronto and Montreal with Sunwing and West Jet.
Honduran Travel Requirements
Currently, the Honduran government is not requiring visitors to be fully vaccinated. Honduras is accepting travellers who are fully vaccinated as well as those with a negative COVID-19 test, although the results of your test must be documented within 72 hours of entry. We encourage you to check directly with Honduran Immigration as well as your airline to confirm all necessary documentation.

Jailene Bustillo has been diagnosed with sequelae of hypoxic neonatal-ischemic encephalopathy. She has had 11 seizures in the past 3 months, every episode causes damage to her brain that leads to weeks of therapy, hospitalization and sedatives.
Physiotherapy is part of the daily routine to recover the strength in her body and mitigate the damages caused by the seizures. Her ability to walk and stand by herself has been greatly diminished.
Jailene’s family is fundraising $10,000 to cover the necessary funds to travel and seek medical care in the United States. They will be flying on the 13th of September to New Orleans to receive treatment at the Ochsner Hospital.
