Sam Croucher is one such local artist whose work we love! We see it popping up in rental homes on the island…and in our own homes!
Originally from England, Sam came to Roatan to visit her family. “When I came I was adamant I would stay only 6 months to see what it was like and to appease my brother who frequently asked when I was going to move here,” she says. “I’m just coming up on my 10 year anniversary living here!”
We call Roatan “The Vortex” for good reason!
For the last four years, Sam has been creating beautiful works of art, many of which are inspired by her island life. “I’ve always loved stained glass,” she says. “How it looks, the reflections it makes, the way the colors change with the weather. After receiving a stained glass painting starter kit as a gift, there was no stopping me.”
“Even now,” she continues, “After thousands of hours painting, I’m still learning new ways with this art form, there’s always something new to try and such a variety of subjects that can be painted with this medium. I can’t imagine my life without glass painting in it.”
All of Sam’s pictures are custom made and hand painted to order. “Clients usually request a certain subject or theme or sometimes provide a photo,” she explains. “They say what size they’re thinking and we work together to get the exact piece they want. I have painted such an assortment of sizes from a 2” fan-pull to a 5-foot window panel jungle scene. I also custom make wooden frame lamps which are rather lovely with hand painted glass panes that reflect beautifully on nearby surfaces when lit.”
